Mark Twain's satirical novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is one of the first literary works about time travel. The novel, published in 1889, tells the adventures of an enterprising American from the state of Connecticut in the late 19th century, who inexplicably ended up in 6th-century England. During the fight, the hero gets hit on the head with a crowbar and loses consciousness. Waking up, he discovers that he was transported to the era of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table - but does not despair. The resilient Yankee easily manages to take a place at the royal court as a wizard, displacing the old Merlin. Using his knowledge of science, technology and history, he begins to actively involve all layers of medieval society in the benefits of civilization: electricity, telegraph, newspapers and much more. Luck accompanies the Yankees in everything, but with his "magic" activity he sets the church and chivalry against him, and they declare war on him ... The book is illustrated by the works of Sergei Yarovoy.
