How to talk to children about 20th century art

Françoise Barbe-Galle, author of How to Talk to Children about Art, this time addresses the topic of 20th century art.

It shows in which direction to move in order to better understand the specific works, movements and artists representing this period, which puzzles and baffles many viewers.

We encounter contemporary art everywhere: not only in museums and art galleries, but simply on the street. Despite these frequent meetings, it still surprises us, and sometimes disturbs or even annoys us. To make modern art more understandable, the author talks about it in simple language, accessible to non-specialists. The book consists of two parts: the task of the first is to give the reader self-confidence by explaining to him the main trends in the art of this time. The second part is thirty analyzes of specific works. They are built as a sequence of questions that can be discussed with children, and are divided into conditional age groups - 5-7 years old, 8-10 years old and older - from 11-13 years old. These questions help to get in touch with the work, move from peering into it to interpretation, and then move on to generalization, that is, to draw conclusions about the corresponding period and about the artist.

With the help of this book, parents, other older families, and educators will be able to go beyond their own ideas and instill in their children a deeper and more positive view of contemporary art.
